God bless all the people whose lives were lost in Madrid and their families too.
Now, as a result of this tragedy, they're talking about implementing security measures in subways like the one in airports. Sooner or later we will get to the point where we have to implement so many security measures for virtually ever facet of life that we will begin to see the ridiculousness and impossibility of it. We will begin to see that there is no way to protect ourselves from all of the potentials for violence and that to attempt to do so is to create a world of absurdity. We will begin to see that the only intelligent response is to abandon the system that gives rise to this violence. What is that system? It is a system that relies on violence to protect us from violence. It is our very way of life. It is the commitment of most of the world's resources to weaponry instead of to love and compassion.
This system no longer works for humanity. It is multiplying itself to the point of such undeniable irony that it will become obvious to a critical mass of humanity, and probably soon. But we have to be careful that the violence does not destroy us first. The age of violence is over. The age of war is over. The age of fear is over. We have to recognize that before we are forced to recognize it.

Martin Luther King said something along the lines of the following: that the arc of moral history is long, but it bends toward justice. No matter how overwhelming the odds, no matter how vocal and debilitating the voices of the cynics, do not succumb to despair. The truth will out. It may not come out when you want it to, but when it does, it will be right on time. Truth is stronger than all the forces of deceit and duplicity. Truth is invincible. Truth reigns supreme over all. It will be revealed and it will be known and no force can stop it, let alone any small-minded man or woman. As sure as the stars are revealed by the darkness the truth will prevail in the end. So take heart in your truth, no matter how obscured it may seem. It will find a way out. Miracles will come to pass to assist it. And when it is finally revealed you will feel the awesome presence of God, and you will wonder how you could ever have doubted it.

Some men see things are they are and say "why?" I dream things that never were and ask, "why not?"

There is a wonderful prayer in 12-Step called the Third Step prayer that I have always loved:
"Lord, I offer myself to thee to build with me and to do with me as thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self that I may better do thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of thy power, thy love, and thy way of life. May I do thy will always."
Isn't that beautiful?

Where are we all going in such a hurry? We are always trying to get somewhere and we never actually arrive. I remember being plagued as a teenager by the idea that everyone was rushing ahead of me and that I had to keep up. Then I did est and had this incredible experience of enlightenment whereby I saw that this is as good as it gets - right here, right now, the good, the bad, and the ugly - this is how it's always been and this is how it's always going to be and to try and escape the reality of life as it is was the source of all of my suffering. I saw that there was no magic answer. I saw that enlightenment was the realization that there is no such thing as enlightenment. What a tremendous relief! I was OK, just the way I was and just the way I was not. It was the first real experience of unconditional self-love I had ever had in my whole life. For about two minutes, I gave myself a break. I had been rejecting my human existence in pursuit of some perfect existence which simply doesn't exist and never has and never will and I saw that there's nowhere to go and there's no need to be in a hurry to get there. Rather than some cold, elitist new age experience, est was about the most human experience I had ever had in my life. We're all here together, even though it looks like some people are far ahead of others. It doesn't look like that from Mars. It looks like we're all here together in the exact same fix, and nobody's going anywhere.
Probably the greatest thing we can do for the whole world sometimes is mind our own business and settle down for a few minutes and give ourselves a break. It's because you and I won't give ourselves a break that we can't give others a break. But we all need a break so badly. We need a break from the constant crack of that internal whip - "hurry up, get on with your life - you're so stupid - you're so far behind everyone else your age - how come you haven't changed the world yet - you're such a loser - look at what h's doing with his life - look at what she's doing with here life." And on and on.
Maybe my life is none of my business. Maybe it's God's business. Or at the very least, maybe it's none of my business to criticize myself, because I'm not my own creation, I'm God's creation, and maybe it pisses God off to see my little mind criticizing his beautiful creation. Or maybe it makes God sad. But I really think it pisses God off, and I rather like that. I like the idea of God getting pissed off on behalf of my soul and my inner being. Because if God can get pissed off on behalf of my soul, maybe some day I can get pissed off on its behalf too, and maybe, some day, that indignation will turn into some consistent form of self-love.
But for today, the good news is you can slow down. 'Cause nobody's going anywhere.
