God bless Ronald Reagan's soul. God bless the souls of all your friends and my friends lost to AIDS. God bless the souls of the 3 million people who die every year of AIDS, and the millions more who die of hunger. God bless us all.

"Fahrenheit 911" made me nauseous. It captures a spiritual depravity inherent in the American killing machine that made me sick to my stomach. To hear all this talk of God and then watch God's soldiers kill and mame innocent children, drag away innocent civilians in the middle of the night, plug the headphones in their tanks into heavy metal-playing CD players while they fire away at other human beings - the hypocrisy of it makes you feel as if at any moment God Himself is going to intervene and wipe America off of the face of the earth. And then you see how the military recruitment machine pits poor man against poor man in a quota system to bring as many ill-educated, impoverished, unsuspecting 19-year olds onto the killing fields as possible. So you have all of these poor people going off to another country for reasons they know not, or just because it was the only option they had, to kill other poor people who didn't do anything wrong.
It is one thing to see a cruise missile land on a house on the television set. It is quite another to watch and listen to it on a big screen in Dolby digital Thx surround sound - where the blast just about blows you out of your seat. And you ask yourself, my God, what has humanity done to itself? My God, how could we have taken this beautiful situation God gave to us and turned it into this thing worse than hell, where little Iraqi babies have bleeding, bombed-out holes the size of a telephone in their little arms, and American soldiers are going home dead or missing both arms or both legs. We have turned paradise into a sewer of blood and wounds and shrapnel and burned-out buildings.
No, this all has to stop. This military option isn't even close to being the solution. Its time is gone. Over. And it is time for a new generation of leadership to be willing to stand up and tell America that the emperor has no clothes - that this system has outlived its usefulness.
I don't want to talk about Armageddon anymore. You know what? I love my partner and I want to build a life with him and have children. I like my frigging Prius and I like my Mac and I like technology and the web and I want to see what amazing things we can develop that my kids will use. I like human creativity and I like a lot of the world we've created and I am not going to let a bunch of well-intentioned idiots get it all blown up on us so we have to start all over again. Not going to happen, if I have any say in it. These guys don't know what they're doing. They know the past and that's all. They know how to do what everyone did before them - and even that they don't know so well - but they don't know the future - they don't know what it's going to take to get the world through this age of terror and nuclear proliferation. They just don't. Their knowledge is old and archaic and it no longer serves us. It is time for new enlightened leadership. We must muster the courage to let go the old ways and embrace the new.
Maybe there's a new way to get to the new leadership too. Maybe we need to appeal to the poor to elect the next President. God knows they are in the majority. If we can get them to vote, they can create landslides. Perhaps that is our path. The meek inherit the earth. And there's something left worth inheriting.

I have read several articles that celebrate Ronald Reagan's death - you know, the "I hope he burns in hell" kind of stuff. This type of vitriol will never lead us to peace or love or the kind of world we dream of.

Saw an advance screening of "Fahrenheit 911" tonight and had the good pleasure to shake hands with Michael Moore afterward. It is one of those films that causes you to re-think what you want to do with the rest of your life. It is a devastating piece of work. It opens nationwide on June 25th.

America is in the midst of the greatest crisis of identity in her history. She knows not herself or her purpose. She has forgotten the brave destiny for which she was born. And so we have forgotten our own. We ought not seek to be the most feared nation......or the most powerful nation. We must dream of being the most inspiring nation once again. To reach out in love to the world’s tired, and poor. To its huddled masses, yearning to eat, to learn, and to be free of the bonds of poverty. Not because it will make us number one. But because it is our destiny. It is our sacred responsibility. America must set new, daring, and impossible goals that will inspire all the world. The immediate deployment of $25 billion to end the global AIDS epidemic. The immediate release of $45 billion to end starvation and hunger around the world. An impassioned call of conscience from the President for American families to adopt the 500,000 children in America who have been abandoned to foster care. And all of the other things. This is not about left wing vs. right wing. It is about giving America back both of her wings so she can soar once again in our eyes and in the eyes of all the world. It is not about Bush bashing. It is about bashing down the limits that we have placed on America’s horizon.
It is a new age that requires new ideas and a new way of looking at America and the contribution she can make to the future. Because we cannot accept a vision of America limited to the prevention of terrorism. She is meant for so much more. Imagine initiatives that lead to mass demonstrations around the world. Not where the American flag is burned in anger, but where it is celebrated in appreciation. This is the way we best protect the flag. Imagine projects that fill the hearts of our own people, so that it doesn’t require an attack on our soil to generate feelings of love for our country.
We must let it be known that the people are tired of cautious, lifeless, boring campaign platforms designed only to ensure electoral victory. We must let it be known that we want victory for America, for the whole world, and for all humanity - that we are tired of talking about the minutaie of Medicare. That we want to see the end of poverty, the end of cancer, the re-invention of our education system. And we don’t want to wait 20 years.
We will let it be known that the people are ready to support visionary candidates who will take bold risks in the name of great leaps of progress. And that the people are ready to help. We must let it be known that the people don’t want someone who asks little of them and promises to solve all their problems. We must let it be known that the people want someone who will ask more of them, and who will ask them to become actively involved in the re-invention of America. Because the opposite of apathy is activism. But the people need to be shown a vision worth getting active about.
This must be for Democrats and Republicans, Green Party members and Independent - for all Americans. It must be for people who have faith in God and people who just have faith in themselves. It is not us vs. them. It is us vs. the problems that confront us. All of us.
It is time for an end to mindless shouting matches. It is time for an end to imaginative inertia. It is time for anew era of enlightened discourse and wondrous vision. Long enough have we wandered without it.
The time to begin this is not drawing near. It has arrived.
