Fear is the basis of all hatred and violence. Do we really think that when democracy has spread throughout the world, there will be no more fear, and thus no more violence? Is there not fear within America, the most democratic nation on earth? And it is not a fear caused by terrorists of which I speak. Employee fears employer. Neighbor fears neighbor. Republican fears Democrat.

It is not a political solution which we must seek. It is a spiritual one. It is a mastery of fear. This is the only true freedom. A world full of democracies will be as likely to annihilate itself as a world full of dictatorships.

It is a sign of our spiritual unconsciousness that these beheadings occur and we as a nation do not stop what we are doing and observe a day of silence and contemplation. Any culture in awe of its God would take this kind of thing as cause for some great pause and reflection, or, at the very least, mourning. We, on the other hand, keep rolling along as if the system is fine and everything is working as it should. We have nano-seconds of sympathy, of course, and we believe that passes for a sign of our humanity. In fact, it is a sign of the opposite. If we were really in touch with our humanity our reactions and behavior would be entirely different. We are asleep. Even as we are racing around - adreniline-addicted - believing that this is a sign that we are awake.

The President says that we must not retreat in the face of adversity. This is true, sometimes. But adversity brought on by a stand for principle and adversity brough on by errors in judgment are two different things. We must be careful to distinguish with which one we are dealing. It is further true that retreat and a change in course are two different things, and we ought not rule out a change in direction, even a radical one, because we, in error, call it retreat. Did George Wallace retreat when he realized that his position on segregartion was wrong, and changed it, or did he, perhaps, do something wiser - that is, surrender, to a greater truth?

I used to think life was about finding myself. Then I began feeling that it's more about creating myself. These days I think it's about surrendering myself. I wonder what I will think next...

Today's headlines - 1) three hostages threatened with beheadings in Iraq, 2) "Kremlin tightens its grip," "whispers that democracy in Russia is finished" - "symbolic - another step toward the restoration of the Soviet Union," 3) insurgents detonated threee car bombs in Iraq, killing 21 people, and 4) Iran refuses to comply with U.N. warning to halt its uranium enrichment program.

Do these headlines seem to indicate that we are using the right operating principles for life on this planet? Does it feel like we're getting safer? Does it feel like the world is headed to a better place? Are these growing pains, or dying pains?
