Happy Easter. May the story of the resurrection fill you with hope. Life springs from death. If a past to which you were clinging has left you, have faith. A future awaits you that is more magnificent than anything you could have imagined. The past has to be taken from us that the future might have the room to enter. Had Jesus not been willing to part with life as he knew it, we would never have the example of his transformation.

"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly." Albert Einstein, 1940

CNN had a safety expert on the other day to discuss the most recent school shooting in Red Lake Minnesota. He said that we need to begin training children how to escape these situtaions. In particular, he said that we need to teach children not to hide behind the back end of a car, because that part of a car is largely hollow, and bullets can pass right through it. Rather, they need to be taught to hide near the front end of the car because that's where the engine block is, and the engine block will stop bullets. This was not on some wacky community cable show. This was CNN and he was offered as an expert. This is how the mind works. As things get worse, the mind tries to figure out how to protect itself from the very system that it created and that is causing the problem in the first place, rather than realizing that it is the system itself that is the problem. The mind doesn't look at this and say, "this is ridiculous, we need to change the entire way we think and live." The mind says, "this is the way life is and I need to protect myself from it." Thus things spiral downward into more and more absurd strategies for survival. If you need any evidence that things are getting worse, realize that there was no need to teach kids this kind of thing back in the 1950s. Or the dark ages, for that matter. .

"For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you'll never walk alone." - Audrey Hepburn

"We must learn the difficult lesson that the future of mankind will only be tolerable when our course, in world affairs as in all other matters, is based upon justice and law rather than the threat of naked power."
Albert Einstein, from a message for the Gandhi memorial service, February 11, 1948

Love is being completely pushed out of the conversation with respect to every issue that confronts us. We are being brain-washed with a message that toughness, certainty, and resolve are superior to love and understanding. Listen, I believe there is a place for boundaries and the drawing of lines, but not exclusively, not arrogantly, and not without a context of balance. This current approach will not serve us in the long run. We will be forced to live the rest of our lives hunkered down, trying to mind-read the enemy, trying to seal up every microscopic pinhole in our armor. This will become an obsession.
The alternative would be cooperation with other nations on grand endeavors to improve life everywhere and improve life for ourselves in the process.
Gandhi may be dead, but let us not forget that his counsel would be a strategy opposite the one we are now following. We're not even close to what he would have counseled. We are on the opposite side of the Dalai Lama, Jesus, Buddha, Einstein and all the other enlightened thinkers of history.
In a time like this you can come to feel that you are alone with your thoughts and that your idealistic views are stupid. That is the nature of brainwashing. It is not true, and don't let them let you forget it.

Buddha said, or so they say, that all suffering comes from a feeling that things are not as they should be. In other words, resistance to what is causes us suffering, acceptance of what is allows us to experience it. It may be a deep sadness or grief or envy, but it is not suffering. For me, suffering manifests as a kind of deep gloom - a bit of a knot in my stomach - a fear of something that I am resisting. I am beginning to use the knot in my stomach as an indicator to me that there is something I have to feel that I don't want to feel and that I am resisting feeling. This is making it seem bigger than it is. It is creating a cloud of gloom and it is making me frightened. Today, for instance, I just needed a good cry. Once I had it, it was over. But for several hours before hand I was caught up in my head - not truly aware - not asking myself, "hey, what's going on inside there today Danny?" As a result, not only was I not letting the emotion express itself, I put myself in this state of general anxiety. Unconsciousness will do that. That is why it's so important to be conscious. Easier said than done, but I did it today and it reminded me how important it is and I thought I'd share it with ya. Hope it's helpful. Ask yourself, "what's going on with me today?" "What am I feeling?" That's always a good starting place.

The Terry Schiavo case exposes the fundamentalist conservatives for what they are. They want to pass an ammendment to the Constitution to protect the institution of marriage between a man and a woman. Last night's antics prove they don't in fact have any respect for that institution. They are invading the marriage - a heterosexual marriage - of Michael and Terry Schiavo because they don't agree with what this husband wants for his wife. So, lest any of you believe you are protected from this despotic behavior simply because you are not gay or lesbian, take heed. These people seek to protect not life or America or democracy or marriage. The only institution the fundamentalists want to protect is fundamentalism itself, and they will cross any line, including the Constitution , to do it.
