CANTALOUPE

Yesterday I got a package in the mail from a very wonderful young man named Connor. Connor is four years old and he sent me a cantaloupe, along with the following letter: "Dan, I really want to send you a cantaloupe. I can't wait. I wish we could send you some milk. Please send the cantaloupe to people who are hungry. Your friend, Connor."

So, Connor, today's post is for you, to say thank you for being such a thoughtful and caring young man. Thank you for caring about people in the world who are hungry. And thank you for going so far out of your way to send me a cantaloupe that I can give to them to help them a little bit. I will make sure that your cantaloupe helps hungry people. Perhaps one of these days your Daddy can take you over to one of the homeless shelters in Boston and you could bring them a cantaloupe and some milk, and you could see the great big smile on their faces when they realize that someone like you really cares for them.
Thank you also for sending me your pictures. You are a very handsome boy and I am sure that hungry people and everyone else you meet will like you because you have such a kind face. Your Friend Too, Dan Pallotta

Suffering

"The buddha-dharma doesn't ask us to give up control. Instead, it acknowledges that we never had it in the first place. When we can see this, the desire to control naturally begins to wane. The point is not to try to stop exerting control, or to condemn the desire to control as bad or wrong. The point is to see things as they really are, to acknowledge what's really going on. Through such acknowledgement and recognition, we can cease to suffer."

Steve Hagen, from "Buddhism Plain & Simple

Is It Impossible Enough?

If a thing does not seem impossible enough, it will not stir people. If it's difficult and challenging, you may be able to motivate people - you probably will, actually. But it won't be fulfilling at the level everyone wants it to be. But if it speaks to a shift in paradigm - if it takes peoples' breath away - if it speaks to them of a world they always knew existed but have never before seen with their own eyes, it will set them on fire. They will make the most unbelievable efforts toward bringing it to life. I have witnessed this on many an occasion. It is by not going far enough that you stifle peoples' spirits, even though a thing may seem challenging.

We are creatures of imagination, and if you want to capture our souls, you have to capture our imaginations. This, by its very nature, means you have to undertake a thing that has never before been done.

People will say that to achieve this or that is impossible. That is precisely why you must do it. If they're not saying that about it, let someone else do it, for there will always be plenty of people willing to do that which they know can be achieved. And there's nothing wrong with that. but you - you are looking for something else.

If there is a reasonable chance of success, it will be in a completely different league than if, on its surface, it feels as if it has almost no chance of success. Into this category fall Apollo 11, the civil rights movement, the campaign to end apartheid, the 2004 Boston Red Sox, the American Revolution. That is the category of endeavor we must seek out. In these endeavors, everything is seat-of-the-pants. Everything must be invented for the first time - every process, every methodology, every piece of the puzzle. Inspiration works alongside chaos. Everything is breaking down and working all at the same time. Mistakes are everywhere. Failure abounds. Despair is everywhere too. This is what it looks like when you're really changing the world.

SUCCESS ?

I was listening to CNN yesterday and they reported on the success of the terrorist-attack-response drill that took place on Friday involving about 10,000 people. It is a curious thing to use the word "success" with regard to an exercise that is necessary because the way human being relate to one another is a total failure.
