Hybrids, Scooters and Gaza
An engineer in California named Ron Gremban spent $3,000 tweaking his Toyota Prius so that it will hold a much larger battery charge and he's getting as much as eighty miles to the gallon on it.
Another engineer has designed this really cool scooter that starts when you insert your Ipod. It's called a Mopah. One reviewer said, "You had me at Mopah." Check it out.
Saw a photo today of an Israeli woman in Gaza weeping as she prepared to move out of the home where she raised her three children - caught in the middle of the pull-out agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. All because people can't live with one another if they're different from one another. We should not look down on these people because they haven't figured out how to live with one another. Any more than we should look down on the people of Northern Ireland or gang members in South Central L.A. The problem's not exactly limited to these high-profile situations. There are plenty of husbands who can't live with their wives, children who can't live with their parents, Americans who can't tolerate other Americans because they're gay or black or Asian or Republican or Democrat. We think the key to our own security rests in the fate of Iraq. It rests in the fate of our own hearts, and nowhere else.

Embracing Change
There's a full-page ad on page 11 of the Los Angeles Times today for the new Ford Hybrid Escape SUV. This is a great sign. I was on an interesting call with a former research engineer for General Motors and he pointed out a conundrum I had never before considered - when the big automobile manufacturers start to advertise their alternative technology vehicles they see it as a cannibalization of their old technology business. Advertise new stuff and you'll draw people away from your old stuff that is 99% of your business. Of course, a little courage and a little optimism could cure that - a willingness to embrace change - but then again, this is a skill all the world could use a lot more of. That Ford is actually advertising its hybrid technology in such a big way is a good sign - it shows a willingness to move away from the old. Indeed, they are introducing three more hybrid SUV vehicles soon. They are replacing the old with the new, shoring up their business by making sure that if their customers move away from Ford's old stuff, they will move right into Ford's new stuff. We need to accelerate this kind of practice.

Eggs, Emotion and Electricity
I'm listening to music as I write this - George Winston. I never know what I'm going to get when I write with music in the background. Makes me so emotional. Is that emotion the real thing or is it an artificiality brought on by the music? Don't really think emotion can ever be an artifice. I think we all have a lot of emotion built up inside us, no matter how psychologically healthy we are. How could we not, living in this scary world where people bomb and kill and maim and set fire to and be-head one another? Deep inside the pure souls of possibility that are who we truly are have to be drowning in tears of sorrow at the distance between what we could be and what we are being. There's a dream inside us all. A breathtaking one. Wonder when we'll all see that?
The photo above is my friend Mike's chickens. He has three of them and they lay three fresh eggs every day. You don't need to live in a co-op, or a coop for that matter, to practice sustainability, and have better tasting eggs. Mike lives in a nice split entrance in a suburb.
Gas prices are up. Again. It's amazing how little you pay attention to gas prices when you have a Prius. Not to brag or try to manipulate you into buying one or anything. I think I spent twenty-three bucks filling up last time, and haven't had to go to the gas station in about four weeks. Life is good. Hope it's good for you too.

Gratitude
I always feel better - immensely better - when I focus on all the things I have to be grateful for instead of all the things I don't have or haven't achieved. We all know it works to be grateful. The thing we don't really know is just how much it works. It's a total transformation of perspective when I'm in gratitude. All things become possible again. Gratitude is perhaps the most powerful perspective available to us in our daily lives. Today, one of the things I am grateful for today is all those of you that log onto the site every day and all those of you who write. Thank you for who you are - for having the courage to be open to ideas that speak to our most precious dreams, and for the vulnerability it takes to be that way in this often cynical world of ours.

Boldness
One of our readers wrote in with this yesterday:
"Woke up this morning recollecting the I'mpossible slogan and the great things done and said at the Suicide Survivors walk the other year. There is so little idealism and boldness in the world today, you have to go out of your way to seek it." How true. Amazing in searching for transformational projects for the new site how few of them there are. Well, that is our job then, to bring the boldness to the world for which it is so hungry.

Possibility Books, Films, Websites, News Sources
As I mentioned a few days ago, we're doing a re-design of the site. It will include a bulletin board so those of you who log in regularly can meet one another, an opportunity to comment on blogs, and you'll be able to submit blogs, photos and quotations for posting consideration. It will also have recommendations on books, films, websites, and news sources that are transformational in nature, and/or that stand for possibility across every field of endeavor - spiritual possibility, political possibility, industrial possibility - you know. If you have any recommendations on transformational websites, books, films, or web-based news services, please send them along - you can use the consulting form on this site to make submissions for now. The new site should be up in 2 - 3 weeks.
Thanks!

Profiles in Courage
Have you ever read "Profiles in Courage" by President Kennedy? It looks at the lives of eight courageous U.S. Senators, including Daniel Webster and John Quincy Adams. It is not a long book, but the issues which it explores and the weight with which it and its subjects considers them reminds us of a great and noble time when statesmen considered their responsibilities sacred..or perhaps it just reminds us that there are men, and women, who consider the American experiment to be sacred. Though they are few, and perhaps have always been, it reminds us that they are the ones we should seek out to lead this nation.
Inconsistencies of opinion arising from changes of circumstances are often justifiable. But there is one sort of inconsistency that is culpable; it is the inconsistency between a man's conviction and his vote, between his conscience and his conduct. No man shall ever charge me with an inconsistency of that kind. - Daniel Webster, as quoted in "Profiles in Courage," by John F. Kennedy .
