PHILANTHROPY FORUM - AMERICAS

SEPTEMBER 13TH, 2016
BLUE HILL AT STONE BARNS, POCANTICO HILLS, NY

DAN DELIVERED HIS UNCHARITABLE TALK TO AN AUDIENCE OF 150.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Dan was a tremendous asset to our Philanthropy Forum – He challenged our clients to think differently, reevaluate how they have been giving, and motivate them to better support the organizations they are passionate about. In response to Dan's point that donors focus too much on overhead ratios, an attendee exclaimed 'I'm that guy!' This guest and many more will be forever changed by Dan's insights." - Bill Sutton, Head of Client Philanthropy Services, UBS Wealth Management Americas

This was the first UBS Philanthropy Forum held in the United States. I had the privilege of speaking at their European Forum in St. Moritz last December. UBS gathers ultra-high net worth clients to advance their learning about philanthropy. I applaud them. As an advocate for changing the way people think about giving, it is an incredible opportunity to change the way people of tremendous influence think about it. This particular conference was held at the spectacular Blue Hill at Stone Barns. The meals were prepared by Dan Barber and his staff. Dan is a huge advocate of food democracy, and the dining experience actually taught us all a great deal about a different, more equitable, and indescribably delicious way of farming and eating.

“Having Dan come to Akron and inspire our leaders and community with his message was exactly what our organization needed to continue on our journey to make lasting systematic change in Summit County, he is the catalyst for us to dream big and be bold.” - Jim Mullen, CEO, United Way of Summit County

Honored to attend @UnitedWaySummit's #knightbreakfast with nonprofit @TowpathTrail. @danpallotta was thought-provoking, funny, awesome - Nate Eppink via Twitter

Amazing talk from @danpallotta at the @UnitedWaySummit #KnightBreakfast - Leslie Genovese via Twitter

My favorite talks are the ones I give to organizations that I can tell are dead serious about change - about changing their communities and about changing themselves in order to be able to change their communities. And I notice that donors and board members recognize that kind of leadership in an organization too, and it changes their motivations and willingness to give and give big. I was so inspired by what I saw in Summit County. The United way there, under Jim Mullen's leadership, is taking the organization from a focus on how much they raise each year, to what kind of community they want to live in, what it's going to take to get there, and what progress they are making toward that journey each year. I left there so inspired. I encourage you to check out what they're doing.

Valley Business Keynote

JULY 26th, 2016
FORBES CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS,
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, HARRISONBURG VIRGINIA
DAN DELIVERED HIS UNCHARITABLE TALK to an audience of 350

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our audience left Dan’s speech discussing and reevaluating the way they view charities and the non-profit sector. Creating this type of community dialogue is exactly why our event was founded - Travis Vance, Founder, Valley Business Keynote.

After my flight being canceled and a massive traffic jam caused by an overturned moving truck I made it! About 60 seconds before I had to go on. The Valley Business Keynote was started by a few people with a vision to bring new and diverse thinking to their community in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It's grown into the premier conference in the region. It's a great community, really committed to change, and I was honored to be asked to come.

44th Biennial Convention

JULY 23RD, 2016 - DAN DELIVERED HIS UNCHARITABLE TALK TO AN AUDIENCE OF 800 ATTENDEES

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"Thank you so much for speaking at our convention in Orlando. From our members leaving the session to an early review of our meeting evaluations, we have heard rave reviews! So many members stated having that “a-ha” moment. We are so happy you could be there to deliver this important message in person. It was definitely a high point of our meeting!"    -    Lori Blair, Senior Director of Program Services, Soroptimist International of the Americas

When I read about Soroptimist's passionate commitment to womens' empowerment and womens' potential, it made me think about the kind of world I want my daughters to grow up in, and the kind of self-talk I want them to hear. So much so that I decided to bring one of them to the conference. The folks at Soroptimist made her feel appropriately special, and I don't think she'll ever be the same.

Cue Ball

June 15th, 2016 - Dan delivered THE OPENING PLENARY at the 6th annual on cue HUMAN CAPITAL CONFERENCE

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

On Cue is an amazing event organized by the Cue Ball investment group in Boston and hosted by author and entrepreneur Tony Tjan. Cue Ball believes that human capital is the most important kind of capital, and they put their money where their mouth is every year by bringing together 300 incredible venture capitalists, thought leaders, artists, philanthropists, leaders and humanitarians in a spirit of generosity and hospitality with no agenda larger than giving the gift of human relationship itself. I gave a very personal talk in which I spoke about some of the friends I lost during the AIDS epidemic, the miracle that is the achievement of equal marriage rights, and the importance of using the events of our lives, whether good or bad, to re-define the world around us for all those who will follow us.

From Dan

Every spring Jennifer McCrea runs the second on-campus week of her year-long Exponential Fundraising course at Harvard 's Kennedy School Executive Education program, and every spring since it began, with one exception, I go and give the "Uncharitable" talk. It's a spring ritual that I always look forward to. Jennifer gathers some of the most powerful figures in fundraising and philanthropy. In the past she's had the President of X PRIZE, the founder of Donor's Choose, the founder of Blue Man Group, and the daughters of Presidents. Yesterday was no different, with the Chief Fundraisers for No Kid Hungry, the Hunger Project, BoysTown, and many others present. It's a smart room - the questions are tough and smart and the commitments are big and sincere.

Habitat for Humanity, Canada

 - May 5th, 2016 - Dan delivered his "Power of Purpose" Talk

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

"I wanted to thank you again for your profound and captivating presentation... The evidence of a profound message is that people talk about it for days and even start quoting it when they get a chance. Both happened in abundance! Thank you Dan for your ongoing support of Habitat Canada. You've been so kind to make yourself available to us over the past few years." - Mark Rodgers, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity Canada

"Thank you for the inspiration to challenge mediocrity." - Pat Mckenna, via Twitter

"A special thank you to @danpallotta for the inspiring talk to #team habitat." - @ habitatcanada via Twitter

"Contemplating the existential nature of a banana with @danpallotta" - Heather Rivet, via Twitter

FROM DAN

Sometimes it's tough to get a Canadian audience to appreciate my extremely intelligent humor. Not this crowd! Habitat for Humanity Canada gathered its top leaders together for a four-day conference  - yes four days (!) - entitled, "One Habitat," to completely re-envision their future. We had a lot of laughs and I think we started some serious dreaming. In 2015 alone, Habitat canada built homes for 228 families. 22% of the children in the families with Habitat homes go on to attain a bachelor degree or more vs. 8% of a control group. And there's a 60% reduction in food-bank usage among partner families. Thanks to everyone at Habitat Canada, and especially Mark Rodgers and Deanna, for a very special morning. I am humbled by the incredible things you achieve every day, and I know you've only begun.
